We all remember the incident earlier this summer when Chocolate maker Mars recalled some of its most popular products: Galaxy bars, Malteasers Teasers and bags of Minstrels due to the potential presence of salmonella. At the time Mars confirmed that there could be thousands of affected chocolates, up to 3,000 in total, sold to customers before the recall took effect.
Thankfully, for myself, this didn’t result in a shortage of the affected product in the shops. However, it did give me pause for thought before I purchased a Mars product and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one. Fines associated with poor food safety practices cost up to £1.5 million a year in the UK alone (there are no corresponding figures for Ireland), and this does not include the cost of the reputational damage to the business.
HACCP based procedures give businesses a cost effective system for control of food safety. It looks at the processes in your business from ingredients right through to final service of food to the consumer. It is a preventative approach which safeguards the reputation of your food business and helps to ensure a compliant and safe end product. The importance of full HACCP implementation at production level – whether it be for a small kitchen or a large multinational food producer – can’t be underestimated. Safeguard your business.
