We’ve been thanking the staff of the HSE staff (and rightly so) who have been working away relentlessly through the past few months, caring for those who have been ill, in spite of the risks to themselves.

But another important industry that deserves our thanks is the food industry - those involved in the supply chain from the primary production of food through to food processing, distribution and the people we see at food retail level in our shops and supermarkets.

These businesses have had to transform overnight, implementing a range of measures to protect their staff and customers.  So a big thank you to all involved in food supply for your efforts, ingenuity and ‘can do’ attitude.  You’ve successfully kept the shelves stocked and the country fed (in many cases maybe too well fed).

As things normalise maybe it’s time for food businesses to look at things that might have been overlooked in the past few months such as food safety training records and ensure all staff have up to date training.
